If you happen to own a Samsung phone or tablet, then you should be familiar with Odin. It is a flashing tool by Samsung that allows users to flash custom ROMs, OTA updates, Kernels, Root Packages and many other similar things on your Samsung phone or tablet.
Mostly whenever Samsung releases any update OTA to their device, the developers usually get its zip file. As you know official updates are rolled out in phases so those users who can’t wait for the OTA can use Odin to flash that firmware on their Samsung device.
However Odin tool comes with few limitations like it only recognizes .tar.md5 or simply .tar files and not any zip files. So that’s the only disadvantage of this tool which Samsung might fix in future update. However for the time being, we have to deal with it. So you have to search for only .tar or .tar.md5 files otherwise you won’t be able to process them on your device using Odin, be it update files or root files, only .tar or .tar.md5 extensions are acceptable.
One other thing that I want you to keep in mind is that you will need to enable USB Debugging on your device before you can use Odin with that. For that, go to Setting –> Developer Options and enable it. Other than that, you will need to have Samsung USB Drivers installed on your computer otherwise your computer and Odin won’t recognize your phone or tablet.
