How to Root Xperia Z2 D6503 on Lollipop 5.0.2 Firmware 23.1.A.1.28

Earlier we reported that Sony started rolling out Android 5.0.2 Lollipop firmware with build 23.1.A.1.28 to Xperia Z2 D6503 smartphones. The update just fixed bugs and came with some improvements, however, many users have updated their phones to latest firmware and lost their root access. But good news is that Xperia Z2 D6503 can still be rooted on this latest firmware, thanks to very simple tutorial.

But it is bit complicated in a way that first we will need to downgrade it to KitKat and then we will flash pre-rooted Lollipop 23.1.A.1.28 firmware on Xperia Z2 tablet. So are you ready?


  • First of all ensure that you have Xperia Z2 Drivers installed on your computer.
  • Your Xperia Z2 should be unlocked.
  • Make sure the Xperia Z2 battery is at least 80% charged.
  • You need to have Flashtool installed on your computer. If not, follow –> Install Sony Flashtool in Windows


Please read each and every step carefully to root on your Xperia Z2 D6503 on 23.1.A.1.28. cannot be held responsible if you damage your phone because it will be entirely your fault.

Steps to Root Xperia Z2 D6503 on Lollipop 5.0.2 Firmware 23.1.A.1.28

Step 1: Once you are done with downgrading your Xperia Z2 to KitKat and have rooted it then download 23.1.A.1.28 Firmware [Only download and don’t install it yet].

Step 2: Download these files:

Step 3: Run PRFC and add the above 3 files along with 23.1.A.1.28 Firmware and click on “Create” button.

Step 4: Now it will start creating a pre-rooted Android 5.0.2 Lollipop 23.1.A.1.28 Firmware for your Xperia Z2 D6503. Once it is done, transfer the zip to your phone SD card.

Step 5: Turn Off your phone and then root it to recovery mode by pressing Volume up button repeatedly.

Step 6: In recovery, install the pre-rooted firmware you have transferred earlier to your phone. Once done, reboot your phone.

Step 7: Move the 23.1.A.1.28 Firmware .ftf to flashtool/firmwares folder.

Step 8: Next click on lightening icon at top left of Window. Select flashmode and choose the firmware .ftf you just moved to firmwares folder.

Step 9: In new window at right side, exclude options, exclude system only while flashing and leave other options to default.

Step 10: Click Start and once flashtool prepares the firmware, you will be asked to connect your phone to PC.

Step 11: Once your phone is detected, flashtool will start installing the firmware on your phone. At completion, your Xperia Z2 D6503 will reboot automatically.

Now your Xperia Z2 D6503 should have root access on latest Android 5.0.2 Stock Lollipop 23.1.A.1.28 firmware.
